Concert versus Repetition

Saturday we visited concert of classical music and I have discover another composer whos music I like. Bela Bartok, really lovely performance it was and today I am listening more from him and enjoying more and more. Somehow modern classical music from 1930-1940 seems to be my favorite. Funny is that I have never knew about it. Only recently I am discovering this dramatic and very dynamic almost theatrical music. Not only Bartok, but Dutch composer Henk Badings wrote excellent music, perfectly fitting to my soul or should I say taste?
Interesting connection I have notice yesterday while listening Béla Bartók music. That performance was not such a ordinary concert. It was general repetition before the evening concert. It was interesting to see cooperation between conductor and the orchestra. I have notice that for observer it is very difficult to enjoy whole piece of music. Performance is interrupted almost constantly by conductor. The repeating of the same part changed only slightly. Than, when you get to the mood, it is interrupted again in different part. Such a situation is repeated few times. At one moment conductor is talking to violins later to tubes and so on. As I say, extremely difficult, almost impossible, to enjoy as observer. Hard work for many hours and that all for single 90 minutes long evening performance.
Don’t you feel the same when you watching those single images, not perfectly done, without context, once a few days? Don’t you feel like you not getting all, that you can’t get into the mood to enjoy the complete set? I certainly would. So that is another reason why no image today… Let’s wait until repetition is over and whole piece is made into perfection!
For me looking at a repetition was like being a peeping Tom looking behind the curtains. Where in a normal performance the audience might not see the real emotions of the musicians, as they have to keep up appearances, during a repetition you see a more genuine opinion of at least the conductor.
