New features

Dear Friend,
I am so excited, that I have to write you all about it. What is it, you wonder? Simple, it is this web sites and its possibilities from the time I moved it to run on wordpress. You know that I have imported all posts back from 1997 and that allows to have access in archive to enormous amount of history. For me it is like reading my journal. Something I can imagine similar to those in books as for example the one from Tarkovskij I am reading now.

Another great features are those categories I use to group post of similar style together. Than we have tags and those I ma using as keywords to link important keywords together between posts.
The huge thing is that internal search possibility. I am sure you notice the search box at right top of every page. Use it, you will be surprised what you can find. Today I have installed plug-in which brings me so much joy of discovering. It is called Related posts and it is amazing. For every post it attempt to find up to five related posts. Sometimes it works surprising good and sometimes I get interesting relations. It all will become better after I categories and fix oldĀ imported posts, but already now I find it incredible useful.
What rather surprised me was ability of wordpress to find and offer available and related pages to the page which doesn’t exists anymore. That means it will not give you not found page, but most of the time (not always) it will present the most similar page. It works really great.
About such a thing I was only dreaming, now I have it and it all seems to be working very well. I would be very glad if you write me some of your though from the other side of my web, experience of a visitor, do you like it as well? Looking forward to hear from you!
That is really cool, Richard. It is neat that you still have the vast breadth of your Journals from throughout the years, and sites! And not only that, but can easily access them via so many helpful and useful methods! Yes, I would be excited too!
Out of curiosity, I just typed my initials into the search engine, and it pulled up an entry from four and a half years ago –

Sad that the links lead to absolutely nowhere now, being that I took my site down temporarily almost a year ago now!
Ah, my xPoW (eXternal Photographer of the Week) – does that bring back memories! I can’t recall now why I stopped doing that, my weekly tribute to other fellow photographers, and their work, showcasing them, bringing attention to them, whose work I admired, inspired me, etc. I think because it was quite labor intensive, and not worth the effort, as the xPoW pages never really garnered much hits… if I recall correctly. Still like the idea though, and will probably do something similar to it when the new site is up… just not a regular, weekly thing, just be something I do every once in a while when someone’s work inspires me enough to want to send a little acknowledgement their way.
Another thing I will do when the new site is up, is allow comments in my entries. I never did prior, because I was more in the mindset that the entries were more personal, for me, hence why I called the “blog” pages my Journal, as that is what it was for me, just me writing for the sake of me writing what it was I wanted to write, was feeling… yes, that was obviously going to be read by others, but not really for them, more for me. So, just didn’t feel it necessary for comments to be enabled and have people share back whatever thoughts they felt like sharing back.
That will be different when the new site is reintroduced… sometime soon… still am contemplating what exactly I want it, and my photography, to represent, be, do, as I move forward.
Okay, so well anyway… another reason why I never had comments enabled, because I new my tendency to do nothing more than just ramble with no end! :-)
Good job on the new features of your Journal!
Jeff, thanks for the comment! Nice that you have found the link to yourself, actually to me mentioning you first time.
You know what is great that wordpress also generates all kids of nice RSS feed links. For example you can track all comments on whole site at http://www.richard-vanek.eu/comments/feed/. You can also track comments to each post easily as for this one, just enter /feed/ at the end of current URL.
And you can also monitor posts in each category and tag individually, so if you like to see only images you do subscribe to http://www.richard-vanek.eu/journal/category/photos/feed/.
I think it is amazing.
I certainly looking forward to see your web back and new images from Nikon D700!
