Day after day
07:40
After all those cold and sunny days with snow everything has changed yesterday. Only Saturday I was in the middle of the night taking images of frozen trees and shining full moon and now is all mud.
But we are all very thankful for such a brilliant winter time. This didn’t happen in The Netherlands for last ten years. All lakes were frozen and people where skating like crazy. Skates were sold out like hot potatoes. We also bought one of the last ones for our daughter. Viera took her old ones and went on ice with her. I wish I could as well, but after twenty years my foot gets winder and I had too much pain when I pressed my foot in my old leader skates, so I skipped it.

In last days I did a lot of tryouts and changes with new web site and now I am busy with designing part of journal or you may call it blog. Same like with photographs I like to present it differently than is common. I tried to use wordpress local installation. All went ok, I just feel not really comfortable with system. It is probably me, but i rather modify my own system than trying to understand complexity of the foreign mind with the risk that next upgrade of the system will change everything. I may still reconsider, but frankly I also like very much mine clean design and also the fact that I can do something different than others have. And I mean not only in sense of using different system, but in sense of presentation. You will see it soon ;-)
I hope you took some good pictures of people skating!
WordPress works well enough in the backend. If you don’t like the presentation you can easily customise the templates, it is not difficult. The Blog you have set up now could easily be replicated as a template, and you have the benefit of WP managing the content in a standard way, RSS feeds etc. But obviously, like me taking pictures, you prefer the complicated way ;)
Dirk I am not sure if the complicated way is not the modification of the wordpress. Are you using wordpress?
Richo – my advice is to use wordpress, either on your own server, or through wordpress.org and give it a chance. It’s just not worth the time to do your own site when you are really just reinventing the wheel; unless you just want to anyway and then there’s no reason not to.
But I believe your talent / time are better spent with posting and writing and photographing and not designing a site just so the site is different.
I would suggest that you pick a theme; fool around with it a bit; see how it all works and how easy it is to switch to a new theme; and do the entire site through wordpress. That way you are building on the work of many developers and can concentrate on what’s important. There is also a lot of help out there for WP developers.
Dave
Dave, thanks for the interesting view. I must say almost the same I wrote to Dirk that the less effort and less time for me is to apply my system. I was trying WP for last five days or so and gained quite a knowledge, but eventually returned to my own system. But you are right that I should returned to photography.
Yes – wordpress is the simpler way and the more flexible way BUT there is a learning curve. For you – it will be a fast and simple learning curve; and you benefit from the programming of other programmers. That is what I like about it.
So I strongly recommend WordPress (on a server that you have full access to) in terms of being able to move files around; permissions etc.
And I know this may seem like a long time – but give it three months. I just can’t imagine that there is anything critical that you won’t be able to do in WordPress; and that it will give you a fast an easy way to change cosmetics and functionality to your liking; as well as giving you some ideas you may not think of on your own.
